About SVNIT Surat

Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) was established as Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVRCET) Surat in 1961 as one of the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) to impart technical education. The Institute had begun with offering Bachelor Degree Programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The Government of India declared the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVRCET) Surat to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) Surat with status of ‘Deemed University’ with effect from 4th December, 2002. With the enactment of National Institutes of Technology Act-2007, the Institute has been granted the status of ‘Institution of National Importance’ w.e.f. August 15, 2007. The Institute now offers 11 B.Tech. Degree Programmes, 21 M.Tech. Degree Programmes, 03 Five Years Integrated M.Sc. Degree Programmes in Chemistry, Mathematics & Physics, One Five Years Integrated B.Tech and M.Tech Degree Programme and Master of Business Administration in Business Analytics. The Institute also offers Doctoral Degree Programme in Engineering, Science, Management and English. The Institute has received huge grants for research under the prestigious schemes of DST, BRNS, DRDO, CSIR, UGC-DAE, GUJCOST and GSBTM.

About Department of Chemistry

Department of Chemistry is a dynamic, multidisciplinary research center covering all fields of chemical sciences. The curriculum emphasizes a broad understanding of all branches of chemistry, reflecting its interdisciplinary nature. Established in 1961-62, the department initially offered Engineering Chemistry courses to B.Tech.-I and B.Tech.-II (Chemical Engineering) students. In 2007, the department introduced a 5-year Integrated M.Sc. program in Chemistry. From 2025, the department has started offering a 4-year B.Tech. program in Industrial Chemistry, making SVNIT the first NIT to offer this specialized degree. The department comprises 15 faculty members with diverse research specializations. State-of-the-art research facilities and infrastructure support ongoing research in: Corrosion, Catalysis, Ion Exchange, Polymers, Organic Synthesis, Supramolecular Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Nanomaterials, Mass Spectrometry, Microchip and Capillary Electrophoresis, fluorescence sensors, nucleic acids chemistry.
